5 Design Resolutions & Trends for 2020

The start of a New Year is always the perfect time to reflect on past 12 months and set goals and resolutions for the year to come. Here at Kathy Kuo Home, we naturally start with the home design and decor realm when making our New Year's resolutions. We want you to think of 2020 as the year that you refresh and restyle your home in bold, new ways that allow you to live exquisitely and in spaces that truly reflect who you are (and we encourage you to contact our Design Team to help you bring your vision to life). So without further ado, here are five top interior design resolutions to try for the New Year.

Design Resolution #1: Embrace Geometric Details

In many ways, geometric details and patterns are timeless, so it's almost not fair to call them a trend for the New Year. That said, 2020 is definitely a great time to embrace and bring geometrics into your home in fresh ways. Whether you're accenting a room with details like an eye-catching woven rug, conversation-starting wall art, or decorative sculptures--or you're making a big statement with a piece of anchor furniture like a bed or bookcase--geometrics offer the visual variety of a pattern or fun print, but also serve to bring order and clean lines to a space. It's also worth noting that geometrics could be on the ascent as a logical antidote to the often chaotic nature of the current cultural climate.

Design Resolution #2: Mix Heirlooms & Antiques with Modern Pieces

When refreshing or renovating your home, you're bound to face the challenge of mixing beloved heirlooms or antiques with any new and more modern pieces you bring in as part of your fresh start. But don't worry--it's actually a good problem to have! Time-tested furnishings tell the story of who you are, your family history and values, and the experiences you've had. So when making choices about fresh design, just think of your strategy in terms of savvy mixing and matching so that you can highlight the older items you love while also feeling like you've achieved a modern update. If you have a collection of antique wall art or mirrors, focus on modern big-ticket furniture items to anchor it; if you have an heirloom sofa or dining table, turn your attention to details like modern throw pillows, rugs, or tabletop essentials.

Design Resolution #3: Go Beyond the Farmhouse Trend

It's Chip and Joanna's world and we're all just living in it. So it's safe to say that the modern farmhouse look isn't going anywhere anytime soon. However, in this design resolution, we challenge you to put your own spin on this popular trend for a home design look that's more elevated, as well as more personal. Go ahead and shiplap your walls and indulge in some folksy word art or a reclaimed wooden dining table--but also consider adding Scandinavian elements, industrial themes, or bohemian touches to make your space truly your own.

Design Resolution #4: Bring Color into Your Kitchen

In same vein of our previous resolution, we also challenge you to leave all-white kitchens in 2019. With the rise of the modern farmhouse look, mostly white kitchen motifs have reigned supreme for quite some time. This year is all about flipping the script and dressing your kitchen in bold jewel tones and hues inspired by the natural world--think hunter green, Prussian blue, and cobalt. Once you commit to a color, add inspired finishing touches by way of accessories, barware, and dishes.

Design Resolution #5: Use Rattan Accents All Year Long

It's easy to associate rattan furniture and accessories with a look that is distinctly summer--the sandy hues and beauty textures radiate warmth. But there's no reason whatsoever that you can't embrace rattan as a year-round visual element in your home. It can soften a design that's focused on clean lines and hard angles, or it can make a traditional or formal motif feel more lived in and relaxed. Not sure where to start? Check out our robust selection of rattan chairs, decorative objects, and even lighting accessories!
