Outdoor season is here! If you're anything like me, your mind has already drifted to alfresco dining, summer vacations near the water, and the simple joy of a well-designed outdoor room. Spring has a way of reminding us what our outdoor spaces could be.
The truth is, outdoor furniture has to work harder than anything inside your home. It faces sun, rain, humidity, and temperature swings, sometimes all in the same week. So while aesthetics absolutely matter (and trust me, they always will), the best outdoor pieces marry beauty with genuine durability.
Here's a look at the outdoor furniture materials I return to again and again, and why they earn a place in my design projects!
Durable Outdoor Furniture Materials I Love
1. Aluminum
Metal in general is an amazing outdoor material, and aluminum is one of the most reliable. Lightweight yet sturdy, its composition means it won’t rust and it’s very resistant to corrosion. A quality powder-coated finish gives it incredible color depth and scratch resistance, and it holds its form through seasons without fail. You'll find aluminum used in everything from outdoor dining chairs to outdoor side tables to outdoor sofas. It suits nearly every aesthetic, whether your outdoor space leans toward clean-lined modernism or something more traditional and layered. 2. Teak
Few outdoor materials carry the warmth and gravitas of teak. A naturally dense hardwood with a high oil content, teak is exceptionally resistant to moisture, insects, and decay. Left untreated, it weathers slowly over time to a soft, silvery grey that holds its own quiet beauty. Treating teak with a sealant or oil regularly can help maintain its rich honey-gold tone. Teak is the material of choice for an outdoor dining table, outdoor bench, outdoor chaise, and so much more—essentially any piece where you want the wood to feel substantial and heirloom quality. 3. Resin Wicker
Traditional wicker is charming indoors, but outdoors it can deteriorate quickly. Resin wicker is a synthetic fiber that’s woven over aluminum frames, and it provides all the visual warmth of natural wicker with none of the fragility. Resin wicker resists fading, moisture, and mildew, and it holds its textural weave beautifully through years of outdoor use. Click the image to shop this look!

4. Concrete
There's a reason concrete has become a material of choice for outdoor designers. Each piece develops its own subtle character over time, and it pairs beautifully with every finish. Fire pits, dining tables, planters, and side tables cast in concrete bring a grounded, sculptural quality to outdoor spaces that no other material quite replicates. It's heavy by nature, which means it stays put—a genuine advantage in a breezy garden or rooftop terrace. Click the image to shop our Concrete Outdoor Furniture lookbook!

5. Sunbrella® Solution-Dyed Acrylic
Sunbrella® is the gold standard of outdoor fabric, and for good reason. Solution-dyed acrylic means the color is locked into the fiber during manufacturing rather than applied to the surface, so it resists fading even under direct sunlight for years. It's also resistant to mold and mildew, easy to clean, and comes in a beautiful range of colors and textures. At Kathy Kuo Home, we’re admittedly obsessed with Sunbrella® cushions, pillows, and throw blankets! Click the image to shop our Spring Summer Outdoor Collection!

6. Polyester
Outdoor polyester fabrics are typically solution-dyed and offer excellent resistance to fading, moisture, and stretching. They’re often a bit more affordable than name-brand performance fabrics, and after a summer shower, they dry quickly enough that your outdoor plans rarely need to change. 7. Olefin
Made from polypropylene or polyethylene, olefin is a solution-dyed synthetic material that combines softness with impressive strength. It repels moisture naturally and is highly resistant to staining, abrasion, and UV damage, making it a smart choice for upholstered outdoor seating that sees frequent use!
