By just adding a few modern and sophisticated pieces, you can transform the rustic lodge style into a cozy and chic space perfect for city living. Walls and Ceilings
Historically, the walls, ceilings, and exteriors of log cabin style spaces were made of...well, logs. But since you probably aren't planning on building a log cabin à la Abe Lincoln, you can capture that woodland feeling by integrating wood paneling. Traditional V-joint tongue-and-groove wood paneling installed horizontally in naturally finished western red cedar or knotty pine works well. If you're aiming for a truly authentic look, you can even install faux log beams as acting structural support (or you can be lucky enough to live in a lovely home with these elements already in place). The more exposed the architecture, the more the space will take you back to the time when houses were painstakingly built by hand.

Wood Flooring
It probably won't be a shock, but wood flooring is best for when you have cabin fever (unless you have actual cabin fever, then our suggestion is to take deep breaths). Traditional hardwood provides a warm, natural look that makes any room feel cozy and inviting. Opt for a wood species with obvious graining. For the traditionalists reading, you'll want to use plank flooring with a warm finish (like a mahogany or honey-hued stain) instead of strip flooring for the full rustic appeal. But we've also seen more modern versions that make use of herringbone floors or lighter, gray wood tones. Pair your wood flooring with a rug to provide a comfortable underfoot. This year especially, patterned rugs incorporating kilim or Navajo-inspired designs are very popular and add credibility to the look. And for next to the fireplace, you'll sure want a sheepskin rug (or a faux bearskin if we're going hardcore masculine hunter).
The traditional approach to a woodland cabin palette is to take cues from the forest and the great outdoors, which in interiors translates to a pretty neutral palette. A rustic room typically relishes in browns, creams, whites, blacks, quiet greens, and ruddy reds. We also love an updated log cabin design where there are pops of bold color (typically red or orange) to add a global, eclectic element to the classic "log cabin." Fabric selection is one of the biggest factors that contributes to this homeyness. Use organic and unadorned fabrics that look as though they have barely been processed: leather sofas and chairs, hide rugs, and sheepskin blankets are your go-to items. If you opt for a patterned fabric, consider stripes, plaid and animal-based patterns.

Home is Where the Hearth Is
When you think of a log cabin, one of the first elements that comes to mind is the fireplace. If you have a fireplace, then make sure you make it the centerpiece of the room! In the rustic home, it's all about the hearth. Brick wood-burning fireplaces are a great element, but don't fret if you have a more modern looking fireplace. The contrast between the modern style and the rustic style will add visual interest to the room. In a traditional log cabin home, pieces with an antique or vintage vibe are your best bet. But with our modern take on the Woodland Cabin, we encourage you to invite simple industrial pieces into your design as well (especially for lighting and the coffee and side tables) In the kitchen, displayed cast iron cookware or white enamel pottery can add some rustic charm. As for art, experiment with your style to add something unexpected to your look. If you have more traditional furniture, a more modern art piece can help keep the room looking fresh and relevant.
