How to Choose the Right Size Rug for Your Space

Hi cuties! Let's talk about one of my fave topics: rug size! It may not seem like the most glamorous part of the design process, but the right rug can work wonders for uniting the design of a room together and setting the tone when it comes to color and mood. And of course, every well-designed space relies on gorgeous furniture, proper rug placement, and the right rug size.

Every room of the home is different and rug placement can be something of a design puzzle. The size and layout of your space will ultimate be essential factors in rug shopping.

We've put together a handy rug sizing guide to help you shop for the right size rug for any space. Take a careful read through this guide for tips—you'll thank us when you've realized you can now avoid the "a little bit to the left...no, a little bit to the right" dialogue.

You can also easily shop by size using the table to links below, and refer to our Rug Guide for tips on materials and styles.

For smaller living rooms, keep all of your furniture off the rug and opt for a smaller size. For a standard 8'x10' size, place the front legs of the furniture on the rug with the back legs off to create a good sense of proportion. If you have a large living room with furniture in the center, the rug should be large enough so the furniture fits without looking crowded. When covering the whole room, choose a rug that's two feet shorter than the shortest wall. You'll also want to keep these tips in mind:
  • Use your rug to frame your seating area, with the front legs of sofas and chairs positioned on the rug.
  • Allow for your rug to show (about 6”) on each side of your furniture.
  • Never place your rug directly against the wall or over common walkway.

In the bedroom, there are two looks that work well: the rug extended about 36" from each side and the foot of the bed or 36" from each side of the bed with the rug ending at the footing.

If you're placing a rug in your bedroom, the standard sizes are 8'x10' (queen) or 9'x12' (king). Traditionally, the lengthier side of the rug should run centered on the bed from bedside table to bedside table with the shorter width of the rug starting in front of the bedside tables and running about 36" off the end the bed.

Also keep these useful tips in mind:
  • If possible, both your bed and side tables should fit comfortably on your rug with about 28” of space on the front and sides.
  • If your nightstands do not fit on your rug, start your rug in front of your nightstands or a third of the way down from your headboard.
  • Allow enough to space to be able to fully walk on the rug in front of your bed; if you have a bed bench, allow the same amount of space in front of it.
  • If you have a bench at the end of your bed, you’ll want to pull the rug out to include the bench. In this case, it is also okay to break the rule above and run a rug (9×12) vertically rather than horizontal.

Your rug should be large enough to position all dining room chairs on the rug, even when the chairs are pulled out (approximately 24" from the edge of your dining table). Your rug should be large enough to accommodate walking around the dining table without walking on and off the rug. Additionally, keep these dining room rug tips in mind:
  • Your rug should be large enough to position all dining room chairs on the rug, even when the chairs are pulled out (approximately 24" from the edge of your dining table).
  • Your rug should be large enough to accommodate walking around the dining table without walking on and off the rug.
